About the Organization

Anjuman-e-Falah Wa Behbood Machulo is a non-profit organization established on July 21, 2001, registered under the Voluntary Welfare Agencies Ordinance in Ghanche, Gilgit-Baltistan. The Anjuman represents nearly 100% of Machulo’s population, including youth, religious leaders, women, and overseas residents. Its mission is to address education, healthcare, infrastructure, and community welfare challenges.

  • Governance:

    • General Assembly: Over 610 members, including local and overseas residents.

    • Board of Directors: 11 members elected every three years, responsible for decision-making and coordinating with zonal committees.

    Zonal Committees:

    • Karachi, Punjab, Rawalpindi & Islamabad, Gulf Countries (Overseas)
      Each committee maintains a WhatsApp group to coordinate activities efficiently.

Anjuman-e-Falah Wa Behbood Machulo aims to improve the quality of life for Machulo residents by promoting education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, and community welfare, while preserving the cultural and natural heritage of the region.

About Machulo

Machulo is a beautiful town in Hushe Valley, Ghanche District, Gilgit-Baltistan, home to ~7,900 people. Known for breathtaking peaks like Masherbrum, fertile lands, and rich traditions, the town faces challenges in education, healthcare, and economy.

Key Features of Machulo

  • Agriculture: Irrigated by winter snowfall and spring water, sustaining local crops.

  • Wildlife: Private parks preserve rare wildlife species, including ibex and mountain birds.

  • Tourism: Home to the famous Machulo La K2 Viewpoint Trek, offering panoramic views of K2, Gasherbrum I & II, Broad Peak, and Nanga Parbat.

  • Culture & Community: Residents maintain traditional lifestyles, welcoming visitors to learn about local customs and traditions.

Education in Machulo

Education has gradually progressed since the 1960s, beginning with a religious adult school. Formal primary schooling started in the late 1970s, and by the 1990s, local families began sending their children, including girls, to school. Today, Machulo has six schools, including primary, middle, and high schools.

Challenges:

  • Lack of infrastructure and basic facilities.

  • Shortage of qualified teachers and outdated curricula.

  • Limited access to education for girls due to cultural norms.

  • High student-to-teacher ratios and insufficient funding.

Solutions:

  • Improved funding and resources for schools.

  • Teacher training and curriculum reform.

  • Community engagement and infrastructure development.

  • Scholarship programs for girls’ higher education to empower them and encourage leadership in the community.

  • Economy: Dependent on small farming, limited tourism, and few jobs.

  • Social Issues: Poverty, early marriages, limited opportunities for women.

Leadership

Since 2021, Facho Sharif Khan has served as the dedicated General Secretary of Anjuman Falah o Behbood Machulo, leading with commitment and compassion. Under his leadership, the organization has taken major steps in community welfare—restoring the Karachi Musafir Khana, launching a Water Irrigation Project, and organizing donations for poor families and fundraising for flood victims. Known for his hands-on approach and transparency, Mr. Khan ensures that every effort directly benefits those most in need. His work has helped strengthen the organization’s role in promoting sustainable growth and unity within the Machulo community.

Since 2021, Shakoor Butt has been serving as the President of Anjuman Falah o Behbood Machulo (AFBM), leading the organization with dedication and a strong sense of purpose. Under his guidance, AFBM has completed major community projects, including the Karachi Musafir Khana, which provides shelter and support for travelers and locals in need. He has also led several grassroots initiatives that have brought real change to the community. With his focus on sustainable development and inclusive growth, Shakoor Butt continues to guide AFBM toward its mission of helping people and improving lives in Machulo.
